Secular assault on the Sacred
R Vaidyanathan
06 Sep 2009

There was a small news item dated 4 August 2009 in some newspapers, stating that the prosecution witnesses in the case pertaining to the Kanchi seer are turning hostile and the case itself might be revealed to be a foisted one. The time period for which a sacred institution has been humiliated and the assault the state conducted on an age old tradition needs introspection by us all.

The day I read a news item that Kanchi Sankaracharya Jayendra Sarasvati entered a Harijan slum, I commented to a friend, ‘he has written his own arrest warrant.’ My friend did not understand. Many of us are totally ignorant about the functioning of the Secular State in a country like India, a point we shall return to later.

There was a debate on his arrest on the NDTV show “We the people,” anchored by Ms. Burka Dutt on 5 December 2004. It was pathetic to see the audience pleading that the Swamiji be treated like Pappu Yadav or Taslimuddin, that law is the same for every one. One “rationalist” suggested the seer be permanently parked inside Vellore Jail as a devotee said the seer’s presence would purify the jail.

This attack on this sacred institution must be understood in the broader context of the threat to Hindu civilization from the so-called neutral secular state.

Is this attack a stray case? Indications are that it is not. There is a demand that the Pejawar Mutt at Udupi be taken over and the Sri Krishna Temple be administered by the government.

The demand is due to the claim that the memory of Kanaka Dasa, a sixteenth century poet and devotee of Sri Krishna, belonging to the Kuruba community, has been insulted by the Matham. Again it is pertinent to note that the Pejawar Swami mingled with Harijans and is a major campaigner for social harmony and removal of untouchability. He is active in the fields of education and in the forefront of the movement to build the Ram temple at Ayodhya.

When the Mulavar becomes Reformer, fear grips the State

In our tradition, there are two types of Mathams. One is what we can loosely call the Mulavar or similar to the God in the garbha griha, and the other is Utsavar or similar to the God who is taken in procession around the temple. The Utsavar is well dressed and the presentable face of Hindu sampradayas. The second category of Seers will know English, will know how to handle the press, how to give television interviews; sometimes they are also globe-trotters.

They represent the “brand image” of the Santana Dharma, if one may use the term. In a sense, they are secular and would most often talk of the “oneness” of all religions, without knowing the implications. Some, due to their secular dealings, get into problems with the State either in India or abroad, as in the case of Rajneesh. One can categorise Ammachi, Sri Sri, Rajneesh and Mahesh Yogi in this category.

The former category is the Mathams like that of Sankara or Madhava, which till recently were completely unconcerned about this-worldly issues and focused only on the Dharma. Mathams like in Sringeri or Kanchi or Udupi derive their strength from a long lineage and the original founders like Adi Sankara or Madhavacharya.

The secular state was tolerant of these sacred symbols as long as these were separate from the laukika issues. This is because these mathams derived their legitimacy from their position and not to any secular support. Once some Mathams began to get into social reform or education or health care, the secular state was upset because the actions of these seers carries phenomenal conviction among the poorer strata and de-legitimizes the hegemony of politicians and bureaucrats over poverty or caste-oriented issues. In the case of the secular-Utsava seers, the state is not unduly concerned as they are mostly individuals with charisma but do not have a hoary tradition and thousands of years of legitimacy.

Conversion or Casteless

This is the backdrop in which the Kanchi Seer tried to solve secular problems using his sacred institution. When he tried to reach out to Harijans, exploring the possibility of a dignified life for them, the political class was disturbed. The secular state was worried since the accepted model in the political discourse for “liberation” of Harjans is either conversion to other religions or a possible overthrow of the caste system.

Swami Jayendra Sarasvati’s model postulates the possibility of their being within the system, but treated with dignity and equality. The SC politicians and secular state satraps whose staple diet is conversion or the destruction of the caste system found it difficult to accept his actions.

Interestingly, some of the orthodox in the Matham system also opposed his approach, believing that being exclusively in the garbha griha or Mulavar position preserves legitimacy. Any deviation to work for this-worldly salvation of people was looked upon with disdain and considered apostate. In a curious coincidence, the orthodoxy attacked the Matham for the same reasons for which the secular political forces were upset! It was, in political parlance, an alliance of the left extreme with the extreme right, to neutralize the middle.

If the State is not secular or neutral, but protective state of Hindu Dharma, this issue would have been dealt with in a different way. The State would have reprimanded the orthodoxy or even punished it for being obstructionist. But the secular State is presumably neutral, but in practice against Dharmic institutions which derive their legitimacy from thousands of years of tradition.

Invite by China

The invitation to visit China was a major turning point in the affairs of our civilization and this Matham. The concerned NGO in China would not have invited him to visit that country without a clearance from the top political authority, knowing how China functions in these matters. It is fascinating that the Chinese authorities that prohibit taking the Bible into their country for preaching and who have refused the Papal visit, invited the head of a Hindu sampradhaya to their country.

Whatever the author could infer from interactions with scholars in India and China, one could surmise that China welcomes the presence of a non-incursive or inclusive religion, and that could be the Sanatana Dharma. There is an ancient Chinese belief that the best rebirth is in India, as it is a Dharma Bhumi. The experience of China with Falung Gong, perceived to be sponsored by the CIA, and the problems with the Dalai Lama, has made Beijing consider other options in terms of religion, which Chinese society needs.

Any other Government would have jumped at this prospect and tried to arrange the Seer’s trip as a geo-strategic move. But the Indian State did not encourage this historic opportunity to foster civilisational bonds through authentic and legitimate institution like the Kanchi Matham, but prevented the effort by not reining in the orthodoxy who protested in the High Court about the “pollution” involved in crossing shores.

The Indian State’s neutrality is a threat to the existence of legitimate Dharmic institutions. Incidentally, this neutrality is only with reference to Indic institutions since the Abrahamic faiths terrorize the State to achieve their ends. At the time of independence, the State should have taken over the land and property allocated to the Church at free or throwaway prices by the erstwhile colonizers, but it did not do so.

The desert traditions can intimidate the State as they have global backup and protesters. The second child of Abraham globalizes local conflict using global networks, while the third child localizes all global conflicts. Witness the death of five people in Mumbai because Jeremy Falwell, a televangelist in USA, called the Prophet a “terrorist.” Witness the outpouring of anger and protests - at the global church level - to the (false) attack on nuns at Jhabua by “Hindu fanatics,” when actually it was the work of rowdies from the same faith.

The US Commission on International Religious Freedom’s diatribes will be picked up by our English media to castigate the Hindu majority. Witness the violence against the arrest of suspects in a criminal /ISI related case (2004) at Hyderabad, where even the Chief Minister had to observe why the arrests were made in a holy month of Ramzan. But the Kanchi Acharya could be arrested on Diwali day! Remember the global hue and cry when the UP police searched the religious school at Nadwa, and how the Prime Minister intervened and expressed regrets?

Obviously, the State can be secular or neutral only with respect to Indian religions, which are non-intimidating, and not with respect to the desert faiths. That is why we encounter such absurd observations like, there has not been any large-scale violence against the arrest of the Kanchi seer so this does not hurt the public.

We have come to a tragic situation, that unless the State is terrorized it does not care. That is all the more reason why the Sanatana Dharma needs the protection of the State or what one may call a Kshatriya State. That State will protect all ancient Sampradayas and sustain the sacredness of the Indic civilization in letter and spirit.

I was completely unaware of the Chinese invitation to the Jeer. I also remember that the Communist Party of China had some praise for PM Vajpayee. Their incursions into India during the NDA tenure also seemed to have been toned down. Is there a pattern here? Do they see the current pseudo-secular/Christian & Mozzie -loving government in a differnt perspective? Or is a Congress-led government just weaker in other ways? Can somebody enlighten me on this? As far as the perceived/future outcome of the cases against the Jeer is concerned, it appears that everything will be allowed to die down without a whimper in the secular press due to lack of evidence. Let us learn to be completely ruthless when our turn comes.

Prof. Vaidyanathan's column is like fresh sandalwood on my heart still burning with grief and rage. It was this arrogant so-called orthodox section from within the Kanchi matham, calling themselves the Paramacharya's bhaktas who destroyed the matham with their poor understanding of the politics of religion. There were one or two persons inside the matham, these so-called bhaktas who had arrogated to themselves to do politics on behalf of the matham and all Hindus. These individuals numbering fewer than five but who had their own charmed circle of submissive acolytes could not stomach the idea of Pujya Jayendra Saraswati Swami who had excellent political sense and a good understanding of geo-politics too, not relying on them, like Pujya Paramacharya to to do politics on behalf of Hindus in general and the matham. This group refused to involve itself when Pujya Acharyas were arrested and have thus not only incurred the wrath of the gods but also of every right thinking Hindu. Above all they have disgraced themselves in the eyes of the Pujya Paramacharya in whom they sought refuge for their cussedness and downright 'gurudroha'. Prof. Vaidyanathan has earned for himself and for all future generations of his family a place at the feet of his God and his acharya. There can be no greater reward. Prof. Vaidyaji, consider yourself well and truly hugged. Bless you Sir.

An excellent and insightful exposition. However I would like to add two points. (1) That Secularism is not a neutral doctrine. It is a doctrine steeped in the Protestant theology and world view. Acceptance of this as principal is therefore acceptance of the Protestant world view, as opposed to the Indic world view. That acceptance has in it all the seeds of discrimination being perpetrated against Dharma. (2) Translating Dharma as religion completes what would have been left untouched by secular terminology, even though related to it. That Dharma is grounded in existent (i.e Sat), hence the Dharma of the Dharma is Sat gets lost. In Brahma Sutra Bhaasya the statement of "Athaato Dharma Juignyaasa". That understanding the foundations and the nature of that what is manifested leads to understanding of the 'Sat" implies that investigations into the nature of the manifested existence is understanding Dharma. Hence Physics, Chemistry, Mathematics Poetics, language, Music etc etc becomes sacred. That is why Vedic / Agamic / Tantric traditions do not restrict to meditation and pujas alone. But all of these activities taken under name of Dharma banner, coupled with the change in the meaning of Dharma as religion changes that. Thus all of Indian Philosophy, Grammar, Mathematics, logic, jurisprudence is now not secular but religious. Hence untouchable.

a frank exposure of the state of the nation.prof.r.vaidyanathan should be appreciated for his bold writing .decades back, jayendrar went to madras central jail to bless the inmates, he received a poornakumbham from a fisherwoman, he took prasadam from a dalit pujari, he unveiled a portrait of dr.ambedkar and he went on a yatra to sabarimala. by these path breaking moves he invited the hatred of the secular media.but history is not written by few secular journalists.it is the domain of the achievements. jayendrar will achieve and the world will acknowledge it. with regards subbu

This article reveals just the way Jews were hounded , converted and killed till 1945 all due to lies of the church. The strategy is very similar. I do not have much idea of the aspects mentioned by the Professor, but it is well written. 40 yrs back there were books written by Avro Manhattan on the church and its methods. His books were not available , the reasons being self explanatory. Readers should go thru all his books ,, now available in cyberspace in full. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Avro_Manhattan. Just scroll down and the bks are there for you to click and read. Once you read these books , you will realise , the way things operate, so that , Indians are well equipped to be tackle any tactics.

Dear Sir, You present a unique perspective on the two types of Mathams and Gurus. The Utsavar types certainly haven't presented themselves as Hindus. They are also called "Universalists". And some of them try to give opinions on subjects about which they have no clue. It was pathetic watching Sri Sri Ravishankar debating Zakir Naik. The other thing that i have found about the Utsavar kind of Gurus is that they gather a lot of disciples of Non Indian origin. Thanks for a wonderful article

This is a brilliant analysis by an outstandingly witty and compassionate individual whose sense of History and geo politics is thorough and inclusive. But sadly the kanchi matam after the tragic episode of the mid night arrest of Jayendra Saraswathi on the Diwali day has steadily lost it's eminence and glory. While Prof Vaidyanathan's reasoning cannot be faulted, my perception is that the current heads of this Matam also had glaringly ostensible defects in their personality traits which perhaps was the reason why they could be targeted easily and subsequently ridiculed lampooned and caricatured by our secular Hindu bashing Islam coveting Christian Matrix media. It is unfortunate that the past few actions of Jayendra Saraswathi even during the life time of Maha Periyawal Chandrashekara Saraswathi who could not be even be remotely associated with a life style and demeanor and a brash loudness betraying a sort of lust for lime light as evinced by the two, had facilitated and made the Matam an easy prey for the unscrupulous anti Hindu Dravida typhoon under whose malevolent sweep we are living for more than four deacades. Jayendra Saraswathi may have had noble motives while making inroads into areas politically volatile and was a definite force in halting mass conversions of dalits to Christdom. Had he played his role in a more sober and dignified manner, perhaps this ignominy could have been avoided. But I still feel the price he has paid is totally un proportional to the weaknesses which anyway as a Sanyasin should have been avoided

Sanyasa Kusuma Shantha , Nishta Shnati Paryanam says Vishnu Sahasranamam. As soon as Swami Jayendera left his holy stick, he should have like Swami Vivekananda come into public life. He with Mahaperiyavar who was alive that time ( an extraordinary saint, who followed the Vishnu Sahasranamam lines) , should have appointed Swami Vijayendra and given permssion for Swami Jayendra to get into public life. There is nothing wrong if he had done it . The reason being as Sanyasi , you have limitations of Vairagya to debate publicly, which he did. May be the great MahaPeriyavar had gnanadrishti and intiated Swami Vijayaendra when Swami Jayendra was still in his ascent towards Vairagya. What has happened has happened as Lord Krishna would say in the Gita. Let us all pray that Swami Jayendra comes out truimphantly out of all cases and all must be ready to sue the detractors, who threw mud right from New York to Nagercoil and California to Cauvery.

Dear Sri Vaidyanathan, Your article is well-written. Couple of points. 1) Mr Shankara Raman had accused Sri Jayendra Saraswathi and was killed. What about those accusations? We've not heard any thing about those claims? Swamiji did not reject them out right (rather, he was not even given a chance to speak, alas). 2) With some hesitation, I mention this (Read in Lankesh Patrike). Sri Jayendra Saraswati needed a Cook and got a Barahmin Convict as a Cook. Though symbolic, it made one feel Swamiji's "Harijan Inclusion" was mere-talk. 3) Accusations, said the small Swamiji was using Matha's resources to means other than religious. In the best interest of devotees, why not the Swamiji's give a justification. No one wants to see a Hero fail and fall. Sri Jayendra Saraswati Swamiji and the Kanchi Matha are held in respect. Names that are taken before starting good-tasks. Faster the hot air clears, easier it is for all the devotees. Thanks,

Shri Seetharaman must pause a while before he gets lavish with his judgments about sanyasis. As grihastas, we do not have the capacity to maintain a peaceful home, negotiate human relationships within the family. We have lousy relationships with our husbands, wives and children. This is just a small nuclear family. Mathathipathis have to administer a small kingdom. Shri Seetharaman is only an individual, a small individual. Let us leave some institutions out of the purview of human cirticism. Hindus must learn the qualities of fierce loyalty for their religion and religious institutions. It was persons like Shri Seetharaman who caused the tragedy for the matham.

Mr.Seetharam! Kanchi Matham has never lost its glory or eminence. It is true that there was a lull in its activities due to the combined onslaught of political thugs, predators of revealed religions and the secular media monsters. But it has regained its posture and back to its glory and eminence now. Your observations on the Acharyas’ personality, lifestyle and demeanor are unwarranted. On what basis you say that the Acharya was not sober and dignified? Please don’t make sweeping statements. And Mr.Venkat preaches about Vairagya, quoting Vishnu Sahasranama! Pujya Periyavah’s leaving and coming back is an issue between the Guru and the disciple (Maha Periyava and Ilaiya Periyavah) and no one else know what happened then and we also don’t have any right or authority to comment on it. And Mr.Mallik gives more weight to the rantings of that idiot Sankararaman and he wants the Swamijis to give a justification in the best interests of the devotees! Aha…what a devotion! In fact, this outrageous issue has shown the world, who are true devotees and who are fake. Let us understand one thing. We are neither qualified, nor do we have the authority or right to comment on Acharyas. We are nobody in front of them. Let us first look at our ‘personalities’, ‘life-styles’ and ‘demeanor’ before commenting on such a great institution and its heads. I certainly understand the concern in the above mentioned comments, but it is also imperative that we should understand our ‘standing’ before making such comments. As Radhaji has said, let us leave these institutions out of the purview of human criticism. Thanks.

While I do not wish to discourage free comment, I would like to make a few observations on this issue. Yes, late Shankaraman made allegations against the Pu. Shankaracharya, and then he was murdered when employed by another temple far away. We do not know if the possibly false allegations and murder are connected, but we do know that the murder was never investigated honestly, because somebody had decided to pin it on Swami Jayendra Saraswati, and then later Bal Perivaar was also roped in and arrested!!! The wife of the murdered man publicly accepted a compensation of Rs 5 lakh from the then CM - how many such victims are so generously compensated before or afterwards in Tamil Nadu? And now - when Pu Acharyas faced this terrible trial with such fortitude, and met their adversaries and tormentors in the court, which alone is the proper forum for the charges - and the case is falling apart because of its own weakness, why should some people think Acharyas must demean themselves by speaking to all and sundry? //// Can you see parallels with the Sadhvi Pragya case in Mumbai? Can you see an assault on all Hindus of stature and courage to speak out? Let us inculcate just two values for the good of us all - 1] Trust in our gurus and all those who stand and speak for Hindu society; 2] Patience to let conspiracies run their course and expose themselves. Warm regards.

this is a typical example of article written using a lot of mumbo-jumbo language to make these non-transparent and non-scientific so called religious clubs sound above the current social/legal/democratic system.   Very enlightening article! Thanks much, Prof. Vaidyanathan. It is time we get trained by people such as Radhaji, Vaidyanathanji and so on, who understand Sanatana Dharma, the politics played by the Abrahamic faiths, the secular agenda in ruining the great nation of bharatha and matters such as these. Because, out there in the world stage, we are outnumbered by those who are trained in defaming Hindus and Hindu dharma and have maintained such activities in an organized fashion. It is fascinating to read the difference between Malavars and Utsavars and now I know why someone like Zaid Naik can project the superiority of Islam while debating someone like Sri Sri. Obviously, you cannot reason with a zealot and Sri Sri is much above this guy, it is time we learnt that powerful presentation skills and polemical skills are needed to defeat, at least on the surface, the hidden agenda of secularists/Abrahamics. In the spiritual realm all "earthly" matters can be irrelevant, and regardless of what these negative forces try to do, Dharma will still reign supreme. However, what as mere mortals we could do to protect Dharma, it is time to reinstate Kshatriya values among Hindu intellectuals. Because, in this world where "perceptions" rule and "brand management" matters, Hindus need Kshatriya intellectuals to take the center stage to defeat the propaganda war unleashed by the adharmic forces through every medium of information dissemination.

Good article! India is a psuedo secular nation. If the constitution and the legal rights of one religion is different from the other set of religions...Do we call this a secular state? It's a farce! What is the duty of a swami - Dharma related work. What is the duty of politicians - Rajya related work. Can these two go hand in hand? I have no answer to this question. May be Kanchi swami is made a scapegoat. Politicians need Dharma for their survival but the viceversa is not true. But when the viceversa happens the result could be something like what happened to Kanchi swami.

Good article. All the demons masquerading as secularists are burning with the desire to crush Hindu religion. It is now clear that the case against the HH SriJayendra Saraswathi was foisted by them to threaten the devout Hindus. And all of us seem to miss the most important point. When a false case is foisted, it is clear that those who have foisted the case are aware of the real culprits or are themselves hand in gloves with the culprits or perpetrators of the sordid crime. And it can be inferred that those who held the power in those times are responsible for commiting the crime. How long can such rogues evade punishment. Already some of them have been packed off to death. Others too will not miss their turn for their blasphemous deed. Jai bharat.

Why few hindus understand what Dharma means . Most of them think it is some thing like good with an idea bad has to be Adharma. It is the duty f Hindus in their dharma have to go and kill adharmis !! This article wants Kshatriyas. Where are they ? Do'nt they know there are very few people of Kshatriya caste ? Perhaps this Professor will turn into a warrior like Parushurama. Let us get this. The MB and Ramayana are part history and part metaphor. The history part is not going to work now, there are much more than 4 varnas. Purpose of BG is all about one's dharma ( vocation/profession ) performing to the best of one's best and true ability.

I got to thank professor R.Vaidyanathan for the bold article. We collectively as Hindus need to inculcate the spine to speak up. We collectively as Hindus need to learn to speak with conviction. We need the conviction to stand by the Guru come what may. We need to learn what the term 'secular' truly implies. The least one could do is to commend those who speak up against the attrocities. The corupt media in India today is a disgrace to the worl of jounalism. YSR paid the price for being an acomplice in abetting the arrest. The arrogant Prem Kumar is languishing with a nearly blind eye in some corner of Tamilnadu. Half the 'supposed' witnesses to the case have turned 180 degrees. The fat lady who initiated this is waiting for her turn. They have dared to harm the innocent Gurus. They shall pay a price. A dear price at that. I will celebrate the day that happens. That said, there is one thing that this incident help expose. It helped in exposing the fake devotees frequenting the Mutt. These bandicoots who chose to give the benefit of doubt to the like of jaya, anuradha ramanan, prem kumar, the biased media.. now stand exposed. I hope they face the consequences of the misadventure. But still, to my boiling blood, that, would still be a small price to pay. Hara Hara Sankara, Jaya Jaya Sankara.
