Electronic Media and Hindu Sentiments – I
Thamizhchelvan
26 Oct 2009

[Tamil Hindus have noted an increasingly anti-Hindu bias in the electronic media. Recently, a programme telecast by Vijay TV of ‘Star TV’ Group on 11 October, in Tamil, ridiculed the Hindu cultural practice of married women wearing Mangalsutras and insulted Hindu women. There is growing concern that this is part of a concerted socio-political move to defame and delegitimise all aspects of Hindu tradition in public life – Editor]

The sanctity of Mangalsutra

“Mangalyathaaranam’ or the tying of Mangalsutra is the most important ritual in the Hindu marriage. The Mangalsutra, sacred symbol of marriage in all Hindu groups, is known as ‘Mangala Naan’ or ‘Mangala Mani’ or simply ‘Thaali’ in Tamil. Even an ordinary thread soaked in turmeric solution and tied with a small turmeric piece is considered as Thaali, because turmeric is attached with divinity, as it is one of the important ingredients in puja; hence the turmeric thread has the sanctity of a Mangalsutra.

Musical instruments (Nagaswaram, Thavil) are played at the time of the tying of Mangalsutra at full volume, so that any bad words being mouthed by anyone in the marriage hall may not fall in the ears of the bride and bridegroom. The Mangalsutra is tied around the neck of a woman so that she is recognised by all as one who is married to another man and respected. A married woman should never desire another man. The ‘Thaali is like a Veli’ (Mangalsutra is like a fence) protecting her, and she must not transgress it. Tamil Nadu even had a king by name ‘Thalikku Veli’…

Agni (fire) plays the role of ‘witness’ in the marriage ritual, a witness not only for the wellbeing of the couple, but also for their character. If they are not sincere to each other and become characterless, Agni burns their heart and mind and punishes them. That is also reason a woman of character is known as “Karpukkanal” (‘Karpu’ = chastity; ‘Kanal’ = Agni).

The groom puts three knots while tying the Mangalsutra around the neck of the bride to ensure her character: the first knot indicates that she is obedient to her husband, the second that she is docile to her parents and the third that she fears God. It can also be termed as “Kaappu” (protection) that she gets from her husband, parents and God. Both the bride and bridegroom are tied a “Kaappu” in their hands symbolizing that she is ensured of her protection and he assures her his protection.

Hinduism is the only religion which projects woman as Devi and her husband as a devotee (bhakta) making their life happy.

Hey Hinduism! You have made the life happy by projecting the woman as Goddess and laying a fencing of chastity around her! I love you like my life!”
- Poet Kannadasan in “Meaningful Hinduism” (Arthamulla Inthu Matham)

It is our culture to look upon a married woman as a mother. The Mangalsutra is not a decorative item. It is a symbol of culture; it is a symbol of divinity; it is a symbol of chastity; it is a symbol indicating the sanctity of marriage; it is a symbol projecting the renowned Bharatiya Hindu culture.

Our culture survived the oppression of Islamic and Christian invaders for centuries. But in the half century since independence, particularly the last three decades, our culture has undergone severe changes for the worse. Westernization and the assault of anti-Hindu forces, continuing alien system of education, self-centered politicians and their misrule and the irresponsible foreign-controlled mainstream media have together taken a heavy toll on our cultural heritage, driving it along the path of destruction.

Christian Media House insulting Hindus

As a milestone on this destructive path, Chennai based ‘Vijay TV,’ part of Rupert Murdoch’s media empire (Star TV Group), has been telecasting a programme titled “Neeyaa Naanaa” (You or Me – Tum aur Mein) every Sunday for over two years. It is produced by another Christian production company called Mercury Creations; the CEO is one Antony. The programme is anchored by one Gopinath, also a Christian. It is basically a discussion forum wherein two teams (one ‘for’ and one ‘against’) debate a subject before a chief guest (a supposed celebrity), and finally the chief guest and anchor declare their ‘verdict’ in conformity with the ‘motive’ of the producer firm.

It has been noticed that this company invariably takes Hindu oriented subjects for discussion, and demeans Hindu culture, insults Hindu tradition and wounds the religious sentiments of Hindus, planting seeds of poison in the minds of gullible viewers (mostly Hindus) so that they suspect and distrust their own cultural heritage and religious traditions.

A few weeks ago, for instance, the channel telecast a debate: “Do we need to worship the Kula Devatas?” The debate was organized between ‘elders’ and ‘youngsters’, elders talking about Kula Devata worship and youngsters against it. It programme would certainly have impacted upon the innocent minds of the next generation against Kula Devata worship.

Similarly sensitive topics like, “Why not we have Tamil archana in temples?”, “Why should we have only Brahmins as archagas in Agamic temples?” have been debated with the motive of ridiculing Vedic and Agamic principles and to project only so-called Brahminism as Hinduism. These topics were utilized to the hilt to create a rift between Purohits and Pujaris and alienate worshippers of village deities. Another topic “Which is better, arranged marriage or love marriage?” saw Hindu customs ridiculed.

Normally, the participants, who are supposed to talk in favour of the production company’s motive, are handpicked by the company; even if the other team’s participants perform better, their arguments get edited. This writer has had the personal experience of participating in one such programme, anchored by the same Gopinath.

Unfortunately, most participants are Hindus who simply come to show their faces on television without realizing that they are also playing a part in the denigration of their religion and culture. For such persons, seeing themselves on the TV screen is a big achievement, to boast about in the neighbourhood. This is a reason for the obsession with sending children to so-called ‘Reality Shows’, which smack of indecency and even vulgarity.

Vijay TV’s audacious show

The last debate telecast by Vijay TV must be viewed in this backdrop and the topic debated on Sunday, 11 October 2009, between 9 pm and 10 pm (primetime Sunday) was, “Should the Mangalsutra be necessarily worn by women?”

In course of the debate, the sacred Hindu custom was ridiculed in demeaning terms and the Mangalsutra termed as just an ‘ordinary thing’ which need not be worn. Some of the outrageous comments made by the anchor and some participants include:

- Wearing the Mangalsutra is only a superstition; it doesn’t have any sanctity attached to it; the Mangalsutra is just an ordinary thing.

- Most women do not wear it nowadays.

- Women who go out for jobs do not want to show themselves as ‘married’ and hence they conceal their Mangalsutra inside their blouses.

- A lot of women do not wear it while sleeping at night.

- Many women do not wear it while going out and prefer to leave it at home.

- It is like a dog’s license hanging round the neck. The Mangalsutra is only a marriage license and doesn’t have any sanctity (comment by a Christian lady)

The arrogant Gopinath asked a participant who supported wearing Mangalsutras if she would remove hers if a doctor asked her to do so before a surgery. The lady replied that she would obey the doctor and wear it again after the surgery. The anchor teased her, “Will you do whatever the doctor says?” which made her squirm in embarrassment.

In a shocking incident, one lady simply removed her Mangalsutra and handed it over to the anchor when he asked for it. Chief guest Nirmala Periyasamy, a former news reader in SUN TV, who belongs to the school of Dravidian thought, gave the ‘Best Participant’ prize to this lady. When the prize was handed over, the anchor forced the other participants to applaud her for her ‘courage’ and ‘rational’ thinking.

It was obvious that this lady and others who spoke against the sanctity of the Mangalsutra were handpicked by the production company and that the arguments of the opposite team have been edited sharply. The anchor openly bullied participants who spoke in support of wearing the Mangalsutra and the sanctity attached to it. One can imagine the adverse impact this programme could have made on the minds of young girls and innocents in semi-urban and rural areas.

Obedient to her husband? How obedient? This is a good column except that the language describing the tying of the mangalsutra could have been more gender sensitive. Women do not like words like docile, obedient and the like. These words are not suitable for the times. The same ideas must be conveyed in acceptable language.

Murdochs Fox is outright racist. it makes fun of Barack Obama. Foz dished lies during the Iraq war. One wonders how Tamil Nad is tolerating this nonsense of a channel.
It supported the Neo conservatives during the Iraq war.

As a reaction to this situation (at least) we must follow our culture strictly without any change. Secondly we must shun these programmes as a policy. With decline in TRP the channels will surely change their attitude. They are functioning (in addition to insulting Hindu way of Life) only for money. For this Hindus must have unity of their consciousness for success.

When i sit for agnihotra i pray to God for Divine protection of Bharat varsha and sanatan Dharma, I recently had a powerful experience and with divine veda mantras i am doing prayers To God for Divine Justice ( YSR Reddys death is ordinary it was a Divine Justice to his misdeeds and using God's name for division of human beings , christian conversion etc.).

Hindus must unite Organise Mass Yajen ancient vedic way which will help in unity, spreading of love, pollution control, prpogation of vedic thoughts, the lofty ideals of vedic culture of India.Show presentations like scientific verification of vedas to public findings of modern scientists etc and vedic thought.

What I want to know is, who is editing the wiki page of Prannoy James Roy ? Just a few months back, there was an email going around that his full name is this and he is the son of a Christian English mother. The mail also said that Vatican funded NDTV to spread confusion in the land of heathens (Hindus), India. I went to the Wikipedia page of Prannoy James Roy and yes, it had information of his being a fundamentalist Christian and his mother's name as well. Now his Wiki page is edited heavily. Last time I checked, the bit about his (James's ) questioning of the Christian tolerance was not there. The info that he is a fundamentalist Christian is missing as well as his mother's name. Below is the revision history of Prannoy James Roy -

The church is extremely active in India since the anointment of antonia maino.

Their arrogance has recahed intolerable levels.

The Hindus have to show these so called minorities their place and say enough is enough.

The corrupt politicians on whom these anti-Hindu wolves rely for support should be defeated in the elections.

can they hold a discussion 'why purdah should be worn by muslim women'

No one in India is a original Christian. History tells us you were all converted to Christianity. I have seen many married christian ladies wearing Bindi and Mangalasutram. When you live in / go to any Christian country, you are all treated as converted christians not as original christians. Be happy that you are all living in a country known for tolerance and persevearance.Do not forget that all of you are getting food, clothing and shelter in Hindustan. Please do not condem any religion, if you cannot follow their ideals.By insulting what others practice, you are committing sin for yourself. Spread Love and not hatred.Be an Indian first.

Such events are telecast in Vijay TV only to slowly poison the minds of the Hindu folks. Anything and everything can be done to damage Hindu belifes and culture. It may not be surpise if Vijay TV one organise organise a programme on the topic "chastity is necessary or not" and ultimately Gopinath or one of his team member may conclude that "Chastity is a superstitution" and any women or man can have relationship anyone they like". Such low tendencies are deliberately adopted by this channel to destroy our hoaray culture. Will the channel dare to organise a programme on Muslim faiths ? Will they organise a programme whether "having a cap on the head of a Muslim" is superstiton ? Each religion has its own value one should not organisedly hurt the feelings of any particular for their age old tradition. They may one day say that wearing a dress itself is superstituion and any one can walk in the street in nudity.

Has Vijaya Vani or any other branch of Vijay TV has gutts to make an arguement that,"Arabic System of Worship is still followed in all Mosques in India." Is it necessary to Follow Arabic System in all Mosques ? or Indian system in respective regional language is to be followed?.
Let the same TV brings this arguement and flash it before the Public .
Will it have Gutts to do that.?

In Tamilnadu, DMK & DK systematically isolated Brahmins for their own selfish disigns. Now they know that they can abuse the Hindu believes and conveniently portray that its Brahminical practices.

The people should know that Hinduism is not and and end with Brahmins. They have greater responsibility. Though Brahmins are not in a position to raise the voice, they are feeling very badly. If at all any Brahmin raises their voice, the same will be used to brain wash that Brahmins are still to be hated.

So, this is the time, all Hindu should unite and show that these politicians are in their seat because of Hindus. They devide like the Mugals and britishers and rule. This is the time for the True Hindus to raise their voice and wakeup, otherwise you will wake in any Mosque or Church one day.

That time, still poverty will be there or caste will be there, brahmins will be annihilated, and you will be slaves of your own land, and when you wake up you will have nothing to boast off, no history, no heritage, no pride, like a EARLYMEN. Wakeup Wakeup. seek IMMEDIATE BAN ON ANY DEBATES CRITICISM ON HINDU BELIEF WITH IMMEADIATE EFFECT. IF ANY BODY DOES THAT, SEND THEM OUT OF THE COUNTRY.

  Dear venugopal,

My sincere thanks to your service to the Hindu society.
Mogals or the British could not do much impact on our culture since they are outsiders - just came and the same way gone.

Whereas, the people like Gopinath or F.M.Hussain the so called artist, are "uadn piranthe kollum viyadhi" like - therefore, before these people do much damage to the society, it is better to Nib it in the bud.-

Need of the hour is - Unity in our Hindu society.

In Andhra Pradesh hundreds, even thousands, of progressive marriages are performed - many love marriages - just by exchange of garlands and no paraphernalia of marriage rituals like havan, mangalasutra, etc. The couples are not the less happier or congenial for that and many if not most of such marriages are successful. The failure rate is not greater than that of traditional marriages. So 'thali' is not an essential prerequisite even for Hindu marriages - for the simple reason there is no 'thali' tradition in the North where more number of Hindus live. Of course they follow havan, and saptapadi. Actually saptapadi around havan (sacred fire) is considered the real criterion for Hindu marriages. The sentiment of 'tali' is more pronounced only in the South, that too more so in Tamilnadu.
All said and done what is needed is happy and peaceful marriages and marital life. That may be achieved by various methods of marriage and good understanding between the couple and their relatives, etc. So no need to cherish bitter feelings either for or against 'tali'.

Majority of us are oblivious of a few aspects
1. Hinduism is the oldest recognised form of human way of living therefore every Indian necessarily was a hindu and due to fear of death during Mugals/East India company have adopted Christianity.(most due to Lord McCaulay's startegy on Indian Education ( He considered India too good a moral society to conquer so believed in breaking the self esteem of the entire nation by eradicating Gurukuls and establishing english superiority by the missionary schools)
2. Its impossible to master or learn the Vedas (even in todays syllabus as more than half were lost in the Nalanda fire)
3. There are no perfect brahmins and hence we can assume its not possible to continue Hinduism as no one really feels any kind of attachment to Hinduism as they think Hinduism is not preached as perfectly like the way Islam and Christianity are....example each devices his own God to ever feel one with each other's God. Hanuman Bakth, Shiv Bakth, Ram Bakth, Krishn bakth..to name few
with understanding the true essence of the religion.
4. Priests are out to defame another who is say from even a different Mutt. No formal institution recognised to impart qualitative training on rituals/Hinduism unlike Christianity and Islam who give a certificated Course on licence to teach in a Madarssa or a chapel or perform rituals in a masjid or conduct a mass at Church

tooo many loopholes in Hinduism that its too late to plug them what with Govt also backing th so called minority votes...and hindus trying to grab the quota as much as possible by proving they are more stupid and needy than the other caste

We are nearing an end to our Race as Hindus...might as well understand we can never ever behave like a devotee from any other religion to take up a career as a priest as he is never given/ shown any respect akin to a Mulla or a priest/Father
Niether can we force anyone to continue as a hindu leave alone converting others into Hindus!!!

Live life as what you want to be than get into any stupid thing as religion...do good to others as much and if you get killed by fanatics just forgive them as they will be punished by the God finally
love

if a mangalsutra is just a thread to these bloody christians. what does a father of a church do by kissing the hand of the bride in a church wedding ceremony , does that mean that the wife of the dog gopinath will allow the father to do whatever he wants just as the doctor . secondly drinking wine in a christian wedding is nothing but propanganda of drinking habits. what will this bloody christians know of the sanctity of a "MANGALSUTRA" who ,allow their so called brides to be touched and kissed by anyone in their weddings. What darasingh did in orrisa to christians was just the perfect teaching to them which needs to be taught to them again. Secondly this GOPINATH does have the courage to change his name, the only reason behind this is to fool others by showing them that he being a hindu by name does not believe in the sacred traditions. IF MANGALSUTRA IS A THREAD WHAT IS WINE AND THE PIECE WHICH THIS BASTARDS EAT AT THEIR CHURCH.

  Dear friends,

As an odd man out here, i wish to express my views strongly. Ive been a regular watcher of Vijay TV Neeya Naana program which has addressed numerous socio economic issues of comman indian has brought to surface so many social issues hidden in our day to day life.

Of late, I see a huge chunk new hindu fanatics who look at any thing and everything with acritical eye as anti hinduism. Are we hindus forgetting the fact that hinduism is in the only moderate religion in world which respects individual thoughts and beliefs and has never set rules for living. All it preaches are guidlines and recommendations of good living , but unfortunately most of those customary practices have also led ourselves into an orthodox beliefs we only have taken these ideas tangentially in the wrong route.

There are so many wives who sincerely wear thali and still have violated the sanctity of marraige while there are equal or more modern women who do not wear one but well respect the institution of marriage. Let us not shoot in the dark and kill our won kith and kin and our own fundamental values and live a psuedo life..
Cultural metamprphosis is a natural phenomena and change in any culture is a constant thing which will ever happen. any effort to stop it is only un-natural and have disastrous consequences.

Let us stop creating this religious fanatism and avoid ruining the glory of our religion. If some elements in other religions do similar things it is not a justification that hindus have counter it fighting against.

The program Neeya Naaana only identified the mental blocks and wrong notions one develops due to customs and DID NOT blame the custom itself.

We indians have to fine tune our attitudes if we really to grow and come up globally.

The anti-Hindu propaganda indulged in by these people is a multi million dollar business. All the persons engaged in it are rewarded appropriately by certain organisations.

The conversion adopted by certain persons is not because they will get salvation through that religion which is not possible through their original religion. It is mostly commercial and income oriented.

If belief is the reasons, I can only conceive of one reason. They are led to believe that all their sins will be forgiven. The sins they had committed could be so heavy that they look for an easy way out. Not only that they need not stop committing sins because they can be relieved of it every once in a while by talking to the ambasaddor of God.

If they claim that the subjects chosen are impartial, they can have a discussion on

Should Priests stand up in the podium and replicate dance like actions

Should the nuns, sisters and mothers wear fancy dress

Should the nuns be kept in isolation, not allowed to mix up with people and lead a normal life.
Should nuns, sisters, brothers and priests be barred from leading a normal life, being married with children.
Is it correct to bar them from getting married.
Probably they will get an opportunity to give the best participant award to one of the nuns if she removes her fancy dress and hands it over to the anchor.

These and many other irrational things can also be discussed.

Gopinath is an arrogant guy. he provokes people to talk anti-Hindu. He will have his end like any body who dared to spoil hindu culture and beleifs (like what happened to Ex- AP CM) Unfortunately we are in Kali Yuga where these kinds of things are bound to happen, but again there will be checks and balances and he & his team will get it back.   I agree with Mr. Suresh Muthukrishnan. The show does not offend or despise hinduism at any cost, it just helps us to spot out our mental chunks(which got developed over a long period of time in the name of custom) in the soceity we live . Again everything gets arranged in the way we look at and take things. I have noted one more thing in that show, people in both the sides were hindus (if am not wrong, most of them) and it was only hindus who debated about the mangalsutra topic though they had a christian anchor and a producer. Why should hindus practice blasbemy? So lets us not get deep into the topic and in whichever religion we stand, all we need to know is to love and respect others.

The simple reason anybody on the road can throw stones at hindu ideiology is that "HINDUS" are always stamped as tolerants in other sense wil shutup and will never rise.
When british left India they said just one thing "You Indians will be Indians by Name sake and will be Britishers in belief".
To add, many secret organizations in BRITAN and USA fund to spread christianity, especially in India and that is an another way to conquer the minds rather than lands.
They go to any extereme to do this and you can see from the christian history (Crusaders etc). The one thing which stuck christians when they read hindu religion was very shocking to them, where in Hindu religion says "YOU ARE GOD". They saw this a big threat to the western themes of religion. "The Hindu Way of Awakening : Its Revelation, Its Symbols" by Don J Walters is the best example to intrepret hind religion and not just the stupid shows.

It is a disgusting fact, that we hindus sit and only discuss on such issues. If any such thing would have happened to either to a christian or a muslim, they would be on streets for an apology. Why is that no person fears and has such guts is becoz we do not take any action. I have not seen the tamil programm, but if it this is true than hindus should have taken the channel, programm organiser , and all those involved to task rather that discussing. It is only possible by the common lot to bring change in our hindu society, and trust me once we start redeculling their advertisement on lord jesus as promoters sell products, people will realise what is there really stand. array these converted christians have ditched their own faith and belief, which is nothing but mother,a person who and betray mother can go to any extend, and can speak any shit only to get applauds for that movement.no cultured person of any cast creed can behave so cheaply about others, a person who has self respect will always respect opposite person also, as he understands the feel of give respect and take respect.
