Trump’s Board of Peace, although accepted by many countries, has sparked severe criticism globally due to the controversial nature of its charter.
US Launches Controversial Board of Peace in Davos
The United States officially unveiled the charter of the Board of Peace at the World Economic Forum’s annual summit in Davos, Switzerland. This marked the official launch of the second phase of the controversial 20-point Gaza Peace Plan. The US President Donald Trump announced an intricate four-tier governance structure with no representation granted to the native Palestinians in the top three levels, providing them membership only in a technocratic committee responsible for dealing with trivial issues at the ground level. Meanwhile, the US President named himself as the head of the executive committee, responsible for administering governance issues in Gaza, of the Board of Peace.
The founding executive council is mostly comprised of pro-Israel and pro-Zionist American officials and personnel, including Jared Kushner, Trump’s son-in-law, and people like Tony Blair, who is globally known for his role in the deaths of thousands of Muslims in the Middle East. Meanwhile, this council lacks any representative from the Muslim nations.
This effectively amounts to a colonial-style setup in which external actors and nations, primarily Israel and the United States, exercise control over Gaza. This sparked severe global criticism and is disapproved of by the Palestinian people. A second-level council, the Gaza Executive Board, was also established under this charter. However, this board also includes several members for the top tier of the Board of Peace.
Global Backlash and Questions of Legitimacy
Trump’s invitation to the heads of more than 50 countries, without inviting any Palestinian or Hamas representative, stirred controversy and caught global attention. What’s more appalling is that the Board of Peace charter does not mention Gaza; it presents itself as a US-controlled international body, explicitly challenging the UN Security Council’s central role in maintaining global peace and security. The US President Donald Trump also made it obvious when he stated that the Board of Peace could replace the United Nations. The lack of any mention of Gaza in the charter also suggests that the Trump administration seeks to extend the board’s mandate to conflicts beyond the Gaza Strip.
The Board of Peace’s charter also chastised the United Nations, stating “institutions that have too often failed” while referring to the “need for a more nimble and effective international peace-building body.” The charter also grants President Trump the sole veto power on the board, providing it with sweeping authority to approve all decisions over all disputes – making him the final authority.
Member countries of the Board of Peace will only be granted a three-year membership, while states paying $1 billion will secure a permanent seat. Such stipulations make the organization further controversial, as the charter does not mention how the entity would survive after his presidency, as most of the powers are granted to him and his cronies.
Implementation Challenges and Regional Implications
The structure of the Board of Peace reveals President Trump’s real intentions. It suggests that this board is merely a smokescreen to demonstrate that he has global legitimacy and support for his unilateral decisions and actions pertaining to Gaza, the Middle East, and beyond. President Trump has numerous hidden ambitions for the entire world. His ambition to take over Greenland has severed relations between the United States and the European Union.
Many European countries, including Denmark, France, Spain, Sweden, Norway, Slovenia, and the United Kingdom, declined Trump’s invitation to join the Board of Peace due to the controversial nature of the charter and his expansionist policies. Many other nations also raised their concerns over the controversial charter and its expected role of undermining the United Nations.
International organizations also voiced their concerns over the issue. Amnesty International stated that the board’s establishment is a “brazen disregard for international law.” It further stated, “It represents a stark new manifestation of the escalating assault on United Nations mechanisms, international justice institutions, and universal norms.” While countries like Pakistan, KSA, UAE, and Israel promptly accepted this invitation. Overall, the inauguration ceremony of the Board was unsuccessful, as most of the Western world boycotted it.
The effectiveness of the Board of Peace was questioned globally. President Trump has announced Phase Two of the Gaza Peace Plan without the successful implementation of Phase 1. The Trump administration has never penalized Israel for its persistent violations of the ceasefire under Phase 1. The invitation to Israeli Prime Minister Netanyahu is a sort of silent acceptance of illegitimate Israeli actions in Gaza. In a recent statement, President Trump again put the blame for the war solely on Hamas. He also warned that if Hamas did not disarm, it would be blown away quickly while turning a blind eye towards Israel’s illegal occupation and continuous bombardment of Gaza.
Moreover, no country in the world has shown any firm commitment to contribute troops to Trump’s controversial International Stabilization Force due to its vague mandate. Hamas seeks international guarantees, complete Israeli withdrawal, and Tel Aviv’s commitment to adhere to international norms for its disarmament. However, the exclusion of Hamas and Palestinians from the Board of Peace demonstrates that this entity would not be able to establish peace in the Middle East and could lead to more global conflicts due to Trump’s colonial ambitions.
